Destination Highlights Northeastern America
No trip to New England is complete without a visit to Boston! Walk along the city’s Freedom Trail to see the most important sites from the city’s colonial days, drink a cup of tea (or follow local tradition by throwing it in the harbour!) at the Boston Tea Party ship and museum, or pay a visit to ‘Old Ironsides,’ a Navy frigate famous for her role in the War of 1812. In the evening, enjoy a meal at one of Boston’s classy restaurants, stroll through Harvard Yard, or catch a theatrical performance.
Much of the year, Provincetown is home to just a few thousands residents. In the summer months, though, the population increases 20-fold thanks to the fabulous beaches, galleries, restaurants, and shops in this charming town. If you’re a history buff, you’ll want to stop by Provincetown to see where the Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact, thought to be the first written document outlining governance in the territory that would eventually become the United States, in 1620.
The United States’ National Park Service described Nantucket as the ‘finest surviving architectural and environmental example of a late 18th- and early 19th-century New England seaport town,’ and it’s a must-see destination! It’s famous for its beaches and thriving arts community, and it’s also one of the best places in New England for surfing. While you’re there, take a leisurely walking tour or visit the Nantucket Whaling Museum.
Newport, known as the sailing capital of the United States, has been a major port since the 18th century and has more surviving colonial buildings than any other place in the country. Visit its famous mansions, stroll along the world-famous Cliff Walk to experience the beauty of the coastline, or catch one of the many festivals Newport holds during the summer months. If you’re a tennis fan, be sure to visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
New York City, a major player in the worlds of commerce, art, entertainment, finance, fashion, and international diplomacy, needs little introduction. Energetic and exciting, it offers something for all tastes. Sail past the Statue of Liberty, marvel at the skyline, catch a Broadway show, or visit world-class museums in this ‘city that never sleeps.’ For an escape from the hustle and bustle, pay a visit to beautiful Central Park, an oasis among the skyscrapers.
